They’re back! Regardless of what any consistent hater and/or naysayer might think or say, P. Diddy & Bad Boy are here to stay. Yeah the world has witnessed the good, the bad and the ugly of Hip-Hop’s own dancing machine. But face it; Diddy is a mogul in this business. He proved in the early 90’s, that he can turn any artist into a star. For the last 10 plus years, his worth has grown to a number that most of us can’t even imagine in our dreams. Currently; still on the grind in 2003, P. Diddy/Puff Daddy/Puffy Combs/Sean John (whatever you wanna call him) & Bad Boy introduce to you (the world): DA BAND.

AARIESTurning Dreams Into Reality |
|
Sisters by Birth; Songbirds by Nature, Ayana & Ayinke are ready to share their vibes with the world. Former background singers for their brethren in rhythm Musiq (soulchild), the Aaries machine is well-oiled and will be sliding into your town so fresh; so clean and oh so smooth… And very soon! Hailing from Philadelphia, PA by way of Alexandria, VA, these twin beauties are more than just a pretty face. They have a talent that stands on its own two. Their voices are a power that demands both appreciation and respect. Thanks to Atlantic Records, Courvoisier and Mama’s Boys Entertainment, Aaries’ strong vocals tore Atlanta’s Level 3 Stage apart. With only a 45-minute to 1-hour set, Ayana & Ayinke claimed the stage and showed Atlantians just how they do it! Stepping from the backstage to center stage was not a thing for these classically trained sisters. Although being background singers for successful R&B crooner Musiq was a great experience, they love the fact that Aaries is its own animal. Actually this is a pretty big step for Ayana & Ayinke, but they are poised and roaring to go. Aptly titled, Always Remember, their debut will hit stores sometimes this year. So look out! And… There voices is something that the world will definitely ‘Always Remember’. Glamourlife: When are you Birthdays? Ayana: March 27th (thus the name Aaries). ••• Glamourlife: When did you realize that singing as a profession is what you wanted to do? Ayinke: My mother and father always had music in the house. My father was a soul cat, so he played everything from Lionel Richie to the Doobie Bros. My mom cultivated that by keeping us in chorus and taking lessons. I think it was around 14 when we went to Apollo that we really realized that we wanted to do this professionally. ••• Glamourlife: Who inspires Aaries? Ayana (Beautiful Flower): Everybody from Minnie (Ripperton) and Aretha Franklin to the Emotions. My favorite is Ella (Fitzgerald) and Louie (Armstrong). I just love their duet album. Ayana/Ayinke: Lauryn Hill, Erykah B., The Roots, Common. ••• Glamourlife: Your sound is so fresh; so creative. What drives you to be creative? Ayinke: Knowing ourselves. I mean you can get lost in this business, but you gotta be strong and stay yourself. There’s things that I don’t do, and regardless of what people think I’m gonna stay myself and stick to it. Ayana: Everyday we learn more about ourselves. Just knowing ourselves created this album. So everything we sing about, we truly believe! This is not something we do just to sell a record. We want to give off the essence of ourselves: Ayana & Ayinke. Aaries! ••• Glamourlife: How did you feel having these tremendous voices, but having to struggle from being background singers? Ayana: Oh, It wasn’t a struggle at all (laughs). Musiq is our family, so when we started singing with him it was fun. It was just natural to go on stage with him and just do what we did in the studio. And it was a blessing, because it taught us a lot. We are just thankful that we had this experience as opposed to just going out fresh. I’m just thankful that God prepared us. It is now our time! The ladies of Aaries (Ayana & Ayinke) truly have amazing stage presence. The Philadelphia based duo not only makes eye contact with the audience; they sing and smile at one another throughout their show. Which makes for a very enjoyable performance. What out for the first single and video for Strangers to Lovers off the album coming to a radio and television in your homes.

Something’s Going
On with The Poww Bros. |

By T.L. Sanders |
|
|
The word power is synonymous with clout, strength & supremacy. Powwer Moves Records survives on dedication, strength & pure talent. Distributed by Orpheus/EMI Music, J. Poww and Shawn Poww are making some serious powwer moves in the music industry – Again! Bottom line: UNV is back! “UNV is back strong and we hope to have a major impact with this record,” according to J. Poww. UNV is made up of brothers, J. Poww and Shawn Poww. You probably remember these siblings from their platinum selling single, Something’s Goin’ On. For those of you asking, Who? The Poww Brothers/UNV’s fruitful career spans back to over a decade ago. Their musical reign started in 92’-93’, when they became the first R&B act signed to Madonna’s Maverick Records. With the success of Something’s Goin’ On (written by J. Poww), UNV instantly became the sons of seduction and the Kings of the Quiet Storm. “We do have a certain sound. We stay true to ballads and rich; soulful Gospel harmony. Of course we got bangers and remixes, but we stay true to our roots”, offers J. Poww. After a 6 year hiatus, UNV/the Poww Brothers have a new record company; Powwer Moves Records, a new album; Faithful (January 28) and a new attitude. Best believe that they are making things happen (and it’s purely by coincidence that their last name is Poww, and their record company is Powwer Moves Records). “Since leaving Maverick in 97’ (with no hard feelings), we’ve been getting a full grasp on the business and understanding how independent labels work in today’s market. UNV has been working on their album for about a year now. We decided to link back up when I got a distribution deal through EMI”, J. cites. Man, these boys ain’t playing. And on the album; not only are you getting that classic UNV ballad, but they are giving you a Hip-Hop feel also with the thumpin’ beats and J putting it down the flow. Serving as Artist/Songwriter & CEO of Powwer Moves Records, J. Poww is ready to get down with the get down! Him and his brother, Shawn has been working on finishing up the album for a short while. It’s like a new beginning; UNV is reintroducing themselves to the world. “We believe that we still have our old fans, but we’re trying to make new ones also. UNV is taking it to a whole nother’ level! Their new joint, Faithful hits stores in late January 2003. It includes every element of music: from Hip-Hop to Pop to Soulful R&B. “We are trying to bring back good R&B music. These days record labels aren’t focusing on having good; seasoned artists/groups. That’s where you get the trendy music. We want to build music that stays around.” I hear that; longevity is the name of the game. Some of J. and Shawn’s favorite artists are: The Commission, Fred Hammond, Joe, Ruff Endz, Teddy P. (as in Pendergrass), Donny Hathaway and Musiq. Yo, I urge you to pick up that album (Faithful), in stores everywhere! Also, the Poww Brothers/UNV will be coming to your town soon with they gear up for their Promotional Tour. Keep your eyes open and heart open for J. & Shawn Poww. UNV is back!!!

Madonna Tassi |
|
By T.L. Sanders |
|
|
To simply say that Madonna Tassi of Destiny Music, Inc. has a good singing voice would be the highest form of disrespect. Her vocal ability is truly unexplainable, and her hunger to succeed is untamable. "I've known for 20 years that God had this (singing) planned for me", states Madonna. So with that said, it's time for the world to witness greatness in the making. Have you ever gotten chills from hearing a person sing? Well, I advise you to get your Eskimo coats ready; Madonna's tremendous voice will make you feel the blistering winds of the coldest Chicago winter. The youngest of 15(yes, 15!), she has been singing since the tender age of 6. No stranger to struggling to strive and striving for success, Madonna indeed realizes that God has already paved her road in the music industry. "It's definitely been hard times because you have certain expectations for yourself and of course you want them all right away, but that's not how God wants it. God sometimes wants you to go through the struggle to enlighten you more; to make you stronger. I think that's definitely what is happening to me." In a business such as this where the industry door slams so easy and opens so hard, a person must have a grasp on themselves. You have to be an expert at dealing with rejection; you have to be very comfortable in the skin that you're in. It's detrimental to your success. And if not in the right place, it can lead to your ultimate failure. "You have to have a really strong philosophy in this business to get through, because there are so many pitfalls. So when doors do close on you, inevitably you almost always end up somewhere that is probably better for you. That's my philosophy; that's what has kept me going." Madonna has also had a tight grasp on something that her mother told her many years ago: every kick is a boost. These few words has motivated her; kept the fire under her for an extremely long time.
On Faith and Hard Work __________________________________________ "Another thing that has kept me going is my sense of faith. Cause I know that God gave me this voice for a reason. He gave me this voice to be heard, so I know that there will be something down the road. And every time there is! So it has worked out really well for me." And she ain't never lied, Madonna is currently taking Tennessee by storm with her current project, "Tennessee Rocks" from the Red, White, Blue & Orange CD. With major radio airplay and distribution of the thousands of CD's to Afghanistan to show support to the U.S. Troops, the only thing that's changed for Madonna is her hectic schedule. And believe you/me, it's no problem for her at all. "I love the hustle. The setting up of interviews, the public appearances - I love that! I love it because I love people. I love meeting people!" And there will definitely be millions (of people). Madonna Tassi is also set to release an Oldies CD. The excitement mounts for Madonna as she prepares to unleash her voice on the world. And since we all know that there is no reward without hard work, Ms. Tassi is well prepared to tear down any and all obstacles set in front of her. "You wouldn't want the reward without the hard work, because then your sense of character would be such that you would expect it; that it's owed to you. Or... That it came so easy, and I don't know if that's necessarily a good thing." Hey, it's a good thing that we still have people in our music industry with undying work ethic and the drive to make it happen. And that VOICE - WOW!!!
Madonna Tassi on singing... _______________________________________ "I get a lot of satisfaction out of singing. You feel that you have to sing, because you open your mouth and this sound comes out. It's not that you're on an ego trip or anything, it's just that you know it's a gift from God. It probably feels the same to a great Painter, a Dancer, a Writer or Poet. We're driven by the same thing; they know they have to do it!" "When I hear myself sing and I hit the notes and I'm driven by the perfectionism in my voice, I want it to be the best. I just know on a certain level that it brings tremendous joy to someone, so I'm driven to keep doing it." Destiny Music, Inc. came into being over 2 decades ago. Creator, Antonio Pulsone has been in love with music since a young child and always knew that music would be a huge part of his life. Tony is the exclusive Arranger and Producer for Madonna Tassi. He is an "award-winning classical soloist, music director, manager and performer. He has opened shows and produced musical arrangements for many international performers, including Don Rickles, Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdinck, Prince Charles, Phyllis Diller and Martin Short." To put it short, this man is lethal... Please believe it!!! Also, don't forget to log on to www.MadonnaTassi.com. What a team!!!

Benzino |
|
By T.L. Sanders |
|
|
As we already know, there is no reward without hard work. At the same time, there is no hard work that goes unheralded. Knowing this, is the key to survival in the Entertainment Industry. Also, it takes a true Musician to understand that he/she is only as good as his/her dedication & love for their craft. From the Almighty RSO to Made Men to the “solo artist”, Ray “Benzino” has been in the game for well over a decade. Handling his business as usual, Benz has maintained both his hunger and his love for the Art of Hip-Hop. “I just don’t take anything for granted. I took the time to learn the business inside out; I really don’t know what it’s like to be a celebrity. I just love music.” Ray Benzino may not be familiar with his celebrity status, but one thing’s for certain: he certainly knows about struggle. Raised in one of the toughest project homes in Boston, Mass, Benzino had to learn at an early age how to survive the mean streets. In our ever growing; highly publicized industry, there is no such word as ‘personal’. As an artist, executive, producer, etc., your business is the world’s business. However, it is my firm belief that every person should have a part of themselves to remain sacred. Take Artist/Producer/Businessman Benzino for instance, from a publicized beef with a certain white rapper to stabbings to the Source shenanigans, the name Ray Benzino has been stuck on the lips of industry insiders and the world for some time now. Heads feel that he is only a thug with minimal rap skills. But after talking to the real Benz, I see an intelligent thug with his eyes on the prize (with enough rap skills, especially since he’s mainly a producer). Growing up in the Roxbury, Dorchester section of Boston; like most of us, Benzino was a product of the ghetto. The youngest of three, the only male and a Pops serving fed time, young Benz had to take control to sustain his household in order for his family to eat. Although having to make a choice between hustling on the streets and the Hip-Hop hustle was a hard one, we see which hustle prevailed. “We love this Hip-Hop game. We’re not trouble making thugs, we’re basic products of the hood. And being a part of the hood you get involved in certain situations. You look back and have some regrets, but everything happens for a reason. And I can definitely say that its made me stronger.” One-Third of the Production team Hangmen 3 (Jeff Two Times & Johnny B), Benzino has been in the game for a nice chunk of time. Benz was hit with a serious case of the music bug way back in the day when he went out and got his first 909-drum machine. It was then that he began DJing and making beats in the park. “Producing is my love! I love the aspect of creativity in that.” By 1988, Benz with his group the Almighty RSO began doing local parties and shows to put their names in the atmosphere. It must’ve been worked, because four years later (1992), they signed their first deal with Tommy Boy Records. With their new found fame in the music industry, Benz and the crew were now Made Men (due to a name change and also in the music industry). To date, Hangmen 3 has produced tracks for: Mobb Deep, Nas, Raekwon & Wyclef. Just to name a few. Now; in 2003, Benzino has set the pace for his solo career. With a hit single tearing up the billboard charts (Rock the Party), its all business as usual. This is Hip-Hop – it ain’t no joke bwa!!! “Hip-Hop means everything to me: Life – Culture. Hip-Hop is our culture!” Benzino has a lot going on these days and in our current stage of Hip-Hop, we are in desperate need for heads that’s feeling the conscious struggle of the music industry. However, sometimes if we speak our minds we get judged and ridiculed. So our job is to just do our thing and to do the music that is in our hearts. “Hip-Hop is now mainstream, I think we’ve lost our consciousness. Hip-Hop is about consciousness. Partying and Flossing is good, but it’s some good things to learn from the consciousness of Hip-Hop.” Ray did mention to me that on this album, he put his all into it. “On this sophomore album, I’ve stepped it up both creatively and lyrically.” Don’t think that rapping is his only, or should I say his ‘main’ hustle. Benzino often gives his energy back to the hood. He has the Unsigned Hype Tour coming to a town near you, he’s working on the Source Awards and the Source All Access show. Busy busy man. And why is that? “I’m focusing more on the culture, instead of worrying about how many records I sell.”

Cascade Family Skating Rink Hard!!! |

First there were Patti & the Labelles, then came En Vogue; after that, there was Destiny's Child. Now for the new millennium and beyond we have the young ladies of NIA. You have been hearing their voices as well as their lead single, I'm Not The One taking over the airwaves for months; you have been starving for another taste of NIA since then. Now the wait is over! On September 20, 2002 NIA released their highly anticipated debut album, entitled I'm Not The One. Co-Produced by Chicago's very own Dave Hollister (formerly of Blackstreet), this album is a must-have. Signed to Atlanta-based independent record label Koya Records, NIA (meaning 'PURPOSE') is set to take over the world with their hot vocals. The ladies that make up NIA are: Aisha 17, Dara 15, Tuere 17 and Rashida 17. Yo, don't let the young ages fool you, these teen stars have unbelievable vocal abilities and they know how to handle themselves on stage, amidst fans and they also give media outlets the right vibe needed to produce stories showing their true to life personalities. Holla if you hear me!!! Cascade Family Skating Rink in Atlanta, Georgia came alive on Saturday, September 21, 2002 with NIA's Album release joint. As children of all ages skated and adults congregated, the young women of NIA made their way around the packed rink to meet and greet fans. "For a new group, they seem well prepared", a random adult whispered to her friend. Everything was calm, chill and serene. That is... Until NIA hit the stage. With fans forming a complete circle around them, the ladies showed on-lookers exactly why they are here and gave all of us a glimpse of where they are going: NOWHERE!!! NIA is definitely here to stay... Out of the 4 songs sang (including the title track, I'm Not The One), all four had the crowd bouncin' and participating in NIA's groove. With hard hitting dance moves and undeniable vocal control, NIA kept the males wanting for more and showed the females exactly how it should be done. I can literally picture the performance as I write. We call that a 'Journalistic Dream' (helps with the flow of the story). With that said, Aisha, Dara, Tuere and Rashida (NIA) should chalk this one up as a victory - you came wit' it!!! Congratulations!!! It is also necessary for everybody working behind the scenes with NIA (Akina, Rhonda & their Parents) to give yourselves a pat on the back. Believe me when I say - NIA is here to stay!!! What's really good?!!! TLS ••• |

"Spiritual People" |
|
By T.L. Sanders |
|
|
With a decade of music industry experience under his belt and approximately 15 years of music making to back him up, Speech is long overdue supreme recognition. Although it is realized by Speech that most of the world is and has been taking his abilities for granted; for a while, everybody wants to be received for who they are, the talents that they possess and the road that they have paved. With a budding solo career and a new album on tap (Spiritual People - September 10), the Speechster is set to take charge. I urge you to pick up the album as soon as it drops. This brother has his head on tight. How tight? So tight that he has both Asia and Japan on lock. Can we; here in the United States, give a brother from way back some love? ! It all started years before the days of "Tennessee" and "People Everyday". The magic for Speech began in his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he used his expertise, accompanied by his hunger for music to Deejay at local nightclubs and to throw basement parties that definitely rocked. "I don't do it anymore, but I definitely have that jones to just go back and do a good ole basement party." So not only has Speech mastered the artistry of vocals (rapping & singing), he is also a promoter and can work the turntables too. This intelligent brother is truly a man who knows himself; one after his own soul. Which all equals up to a Godly-multifaceted individual (a plan that our father has mapped out for all of us). By 1991, Arrested Development was formed and Speech along with his counterparts were prepared to kick down doors with their creative steel-toed boots. And that is exactly what they did: set the pace and the standard for many artists seen in today's Entertainment Industry. Hailed as one of Hip-Hop's most influential groups, Arrested Development tackled social, spiritual and political issues with their critically acclaimed; Grammy Award Winning debut, 3 Years 5 Months and 2 Days in The Life Of... "We were just doing what we do in Arrested Development. We did want to be the first to do certain things. We wanted to be the first to have men and women in the same group. We did want to bring 'rural country' to Hip-Hop. I'm glad we had a hand in that." In all actuality, Speech and Arrested Development had a hand, an arm and a brain in the very beginnings of this conscious rap/neo-soul movement that our music industry thrives on so heavily these days. After a 4-year reign, the six members of Arrested Development all went their separate ways. Thus, bringing rise to such great entertainers as: the Roots, Jill Scott, Musiq, Glenn Lewis and Nappy Roots; to name a few. In more ways than one, Arrested Development helped to plant the seeds that is now labeled the "Neo-Soul Era". "I remember a day when I couldn't afford on apartment and had to work at a Mobile Car Wash all day. I haven't had to go back to that. Now, I can do music and what's truly something that I love to do." No stranger to being creatively free, Speech has been building his solo career since 1996. Block by block; Brick by brick he has been climbing, grinding all over the world. The secret to his success: being himself, and staying fresh & original. "I produced Arrested Development and wrote most of the stuff on the albums. I'm gonna keep doing the music that comes from my heart, from my experiences." Speech isn't a one-track artist, the brother is bad: he performs Folk, Jazz and Hip-Hip. Just to name some of many styles, many styles. He performs for all people: Black or White. Creativity bares no judgments. "That's one of the things that I try to do with my music, expand black peoples and anybody's mind. I take my music to different places - Jazz, Folk, Hip-Hop, etc. And it works when you go at it with a good heart", says Speech. "Don't underestimate what their minds can conceive. People's minds are a lot thicker than what people think they are. We keep feeding them the same stuff, but the truth is that they can handle stuff that's deeper - if they're fed that." Speech on 'cats in the street' Present day Speech has weathered the unfriendly storm of being in a group, and being a solo artist. Although completely accidental, Speech's solo career has taken him to new heights. "My solo career has been a very humbling experience in my life. And... I have learned a lot about life; who I am and what I'm made of. It was hard, but it was good because I learned by it," explained Speech. Quite frankly, it has been a hard knock life for Speech's solo career. From great success to moderate disappointment, Speech has kept his head up and his eyes on the prize. In this game, patience isdefinitely power. You never know when it's the real thing. Because theworld is an extremely fickle place, we have to get to know ourselves, as well as our talents. Confidence is your most faithful comrade. Whether it be an audience of 30,000 or a small crowd of 5, you have to rock your shit like there's no tomorrow. Something that Speech knows all about. Instead of throwing in the towel, he sat his pride aside and attacked the stage until the job was complete! But what does that gain you?! "What I've learned from my experiences is that I have to have character. I gotta be a man and do my thing regardless of what people are feeling. I gotta make sure that I try to be excellent at whatever it is that I do." Now, that's gangster!!! "If this record blows up here in the States, it's just because I stayed true to myself and I didn't compromise my integrity." The date to watch on the calendar was September 10, 2002. B STREET LIVE: Taped
Live in Atlanta, U.S.A. |

By T.L. Sanders |
|
|
Created by former V.P. of LaFace Records & V.P. of A&R for Atlantic Records Bryant Reid, B Street Live is a half hour musical experience that brings some of the hottest and talented acts to the stage to showcase their offerings to our world of Entertainment. The show is shot live at the Celebrity Rock Cafe¹ in Atlanta, GA. ³Each episode of B Street Live will feature six acts, performing two songs each.² Not only does the world get to experience Atlanta¹s wrath, we also get to see a pioneer at work: B Street Live is the first African-American show to air on Turner Broadcasting Network. So we know that we are obligated to support. Without a doubt! It all went down on July 31, 2002 at the Celebrity Rock Cafe¹ in Atlanta, Georgia. Hosted by rap specialist Rasheeda, the stage was on fire. Amongst the notables that took the stage hostage were Nicci Gilbert (former lead singer of Brownstone), Corey (Motown) and Speech (former front man of conscious rap pioneers Arrested Development). Oh yeah it was definitely hot up in there (as Nelly would put it). And it got even hotter! As we all know, hunger makes one a fire-spitter - unsigned female rapper Sarai blew the stage up.... Also manhandling the stage was R&B crooner Amanda and R&B male duo Raw Soul. Ok, ok, ok, let¹s talk SUPPORT!!! Atlanta¹s Industry Elite is known to support a fellow brethren - in the house chillin¹ were: Angie Stone, the Calhouns, Lil G (Silk), Griff (Comedian), Emmanuel Lewis (Actor) and producers Bryan Michael Cox, Anthony Dent and Gene Griffin. I¹m telling you, B Street Live is the place to be. But if you can¹t be there, in front of your television; October is where you should be. And just in case you didn¹t know, Bryant Reid is responsible for such talent as: Toni Braxton, JD, Donnell Jones and Usher. And that¹s most of the Industry¹s hard hitters. What does that say about Mr. Reid? Feel him!!! TLS ••• |

By T.L. Sanders |

More than just a major sports personality, Atlanta Hawks star Jason Terry definitely gives back to his community (and beyond). From July 26-28, 2002 in Atlanta, Georgia, Jason Terry held his 2nd Annual UNCF/Jason Terry All-Star Hoops Showdown. This annual event is a fundraiser to benefit Atlanta University Center Schools. Only in its 2nd year, Terry¹s annual UNCF event not only helps young people get a college education, it also brings some of the biggest basketball stars and celebrity entertainers to Atlanta. Amongst the celebrities this year were: Shareef Abdur-Rahim (Hawks), Cedric Ceballos (retired), Baron Davis (Hornets), Jumaine Jones (Cavaliers), Charles Oakley (Bulls), Gary Payton (Sonics), Eric Snow (76ers) and Robert ³Tractor² Traylor (Hornets) just to name a few. On this weekend, Atlanta played host to many fans. Also scheduled: mini concerts, autograph signings, youth events, hot parties and the all-famous finale - Celebrity Basketball game featuring many of your favorite pro athletes. There was even a mini-concert after the game featuring Ms. Nicci Gilbert formerly of the famed group Brownstone. And you know she handled her business!!! The game itself; held on July 28, 2002 at Phillips Arena (home of the Hawks), brought a crowd of over 20,000 screaming fans to witness all the fancy lay-ups and circus dunks that only an All-Star game can bring. Although Jason Terry¹s team fell short of the victory by over 10 points (139-122), his generous spirit raised a large sum for Atlanta¹s 5 UNCF sponsored institutions. The parents, students and our entire community thank you Jason. That¹s what you call
tireless giving... TLS ••• |

"BRONNER BROTHERS HAIR
SHOW MAKES ITS MARK |

By T.L. Sanders |

Hair... Hair... Hair... If there was any one person or any group of people that either resides in or visited Atlanta on the weekend of August 3-5, 2002, he/she or they were aware of the Infamous Bronner Brothers Hair Show that takes place every year. The place to be was the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA. Whether you were a stylist, client or just curious about the happenings of the weekend - this is where: vendors got their sell on! Stylist got their style on! And, clients got their do¹s done up! Vendors, Stylists, Clients & Spectators alike traveled to Atlanta by the busloads to witness firsthand, the best in Hair & Entertainment. Hey, different styles call for different measures. This weekend, the World Congress Center ingested many hairstyles: real hair, weaved hair, braided hair, big hair, natural hair, blue hair, red hair, white hair. Hair... Hair... Hair... With stages set up fashion show style and a similar styled audience, stylists from all walks of life were able to showcase their abilities. Beauty professionals from Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit and even Gary, Indiana made their presence and their hairstyles felt at the official Hair Battle Royale 2002. This is where men & women sharpened their shears, heated their curling irons and got down to the hair of the matter. And oh boy, it was on!!! The Bronner Brothers stage was a grand spectacle: all white; embossed in black & gold. Although the major function of the weekend was the hair show, Bronner Brothers also allowed non-hair professionals to get their groove on. The weekend of August 3-5, 2002 also boasted a Comedy Show featuring BET Comics: Steve Brown, Don ³DC² Curry and Gary Owens, after parties all weekend, a Gospel stage play (Good God A' Mighty), and a live concert with Kelly Price. And with all that plus instructional classes, there is no way that Atlanta could have went wrong this weekend. Until next year... TLS ••• |

Lisa Nicole Lopes
1971 - 2002 |
|
By T.L. Sanders |
|
|
Even though it’s not my place to ask, I must put it in the atmosphere anyway: Why? Many are wondering if this is a tell-tell sign of what the future of our world will be like. The reality of the matter is that God makes the calls; he/she/it/the entity is the referee. Every body has a marked path, and every spirit has a purpose. And in the words of our fallen princess, "Energy doesn’t die, it transforms." My deepest; most heartfelt condolences go out to the family & friends of Ms. Lisa Lopes. On April 25, 2002, Lisa Lopes transcended into her next life. With a stream of talents that far exceeded the normal, apparently her spirit glowed. It is definitely a sad occasion when you can only hear of a person’s achievements after they’re gone. Personally, I feel cheated! For her entire career, the media played this young "rapper" like a one-sided coin; a volatile, reckless individual. And it may have been true in some ways, but what about the flip side? Excuse me if I become redundant, but it is detrimental to my readers that I attempt to uncover the ‘unpretty’; non-media friendly side of the coin. In life, Lisa Lopes’ sun was in Gemini (the twins). So that told quite a bit about her personality. She was most likely the sweetest person, but could be a vicious pit bull if provoked. And to nobody’s surprise, the latter is all that was reported. In life, Lisa Lopes was a humanitarian, a mother, a God-mother, a seamstress, a strong-will, a sister, a friend, a solo artist, and also a member of the multi-platinum; top selling female group of all time TLC, along with Rozonda Thomas and Tionne Watkins. I can only imagine how the untimely passing of one of entertainments finest has affected the people closest to her. I whole-heartedly pray that everyone that cared about her told her how special she was to them. Like her brother, Ronald Lopes mentioned in a press in conference in Honduras, "she was a community service." And Arista head honcho was quoted as saying, "she was difficult for the right reasons." Lisa, Rozonda & Tionne’s success began in 1992 with the smash debut release, Oooooooh... On the TLC tip. From there on, these three ATL hit makers never looked back. Going on for the next 10 years to win award after award (including multiple Grammy’s), the ladies of TLC have sold over 25 million records. And to back up the incidents of burning residences, group challenges & conflicts and media hype, Ms. Lisa Nicole Lopes’ resume speaks for itself. Her long list of achievements include: a production company, a clothing line, a solo album (Supernova) released internationally in 2001, a planned release of a cookbook (Chef Eye Kitchen), founder of a successful female R&B group (Blaque) and founder of soon-to-be successes, Egypt. With all of these achievements, and surely new ones brewing, how could an entire world not know? The world knew Lisa Lopes by her show business moniker; by the image she made of her real self. All previously listed accomplishments should have been of the media events and happenings to be reported on her life. Her personal actions and relationships are termed PERSONAL for a reason. It seems so unfair to us on earth that someone so special; so vibrant can be taken from us so soon. In all actuality, she fulfilled her purpose here on earth according to God. During her life and after, Lisa Lopes has taught a lot of people, a lot of lessons, about a lot of things, accompanied by a lot of experiences of her own. Mission Accomplished! And according to Dr. Sebi, holistic healer in Honduras where Lisa Lopes retreated for peace of mind & spirit, "she was happy, calm and vibrant. I will always remember her for her love and sincerity and her laughter. She was a giver. I believe she was prepared to make the transition from this life to the next." At the time of her inopportune fatal accident, Lisa Lopes was at the top of her game. Reported to be in Honduras on a humanitarian mission. She was said to have been there to help disadvantaged children and villagers who were of their native African and Indian decent. She had purchased different plots of land to build schools, a home and a studio in Honduras. Lisa was a giver; not a fool, she took time for herself there also. On her month long visit (which began on March 30th), she traveled with an entourage of 12 for spiritual cleansing, peace and promotion (gathering footage from the Honduras trip for her new group, Egypt). Her uncle, Anthony Lopes moved to Honduras 2 years ago to look after the land while Lisa was in the states. He is said to have a young son with eyes that closely resemble Ms. Lopes’. Lisa Lopes and her entourage planned to return to the states on Monday, April 29, 2002. Lisa Lopes died on April 25th, in car accident in Honduras that injured 8 others. As an Entertainment Writer, it is extremely sad when one of your peers is taken without warning. Who knows what heights she could have reached? Ironically so, she is now at the ultimate high of her entire being. For the entire Entertainment world, Thursday, May 3, 2002 was both a sad, as well as joyous occasion. On this day in Atlanta, Georgia, Lisa Nicole Lopes was put to rest. With 500 reserved seats for immediate family & friends, the funeral of Lisa Lopes was attended by more than 30,000 mourners. Because of who and what TLC was, it made the entire industry’s decision making population (fans also traveled from all cities) attend her "home going". There were local television cameras, BET, MTV, CNN, blah, blah, blah. Does any occasion remain sacred? Not my place; not my judgment. But everybody was there, along with enough fans that were there to see who was there. Out of respect for Lisa Lopes’ family & friends, I wore my suit (but decided against attending). To the family (including Rozonda and Tionne): I apologize for your heartache and always know that there’s a brighter side. Lisa Nicole Lopes is survived by her mother, Wanda Lopes, sister, Raina Lopes, brother, Ronald Lopes, her daughter and two sisters of mind, body & spirit, Rozonda Thomas and Tionne Watkins. In Honduras, there were plans for the natives there to honor Lisa Lopes’ life and spirit on Sunday, May 6, 2002 at a church in front of her uncle’s home. Lisa departed this life exactly 8 months to the day of our other fallen angel, Aaliyah. Aaliyah died in a plane crash that killed 8 others on August 25, 2001. May both these young ladies’ wings extend the lengths of heaven & their souls rest in peace. TLS ••• |

OSCARS - "TWO BIRDS IN ONE NIGHT, HUH?" |
|
by: T.L. Sanders |
|
|
In the immortal words of X-Clan, "Vanglorious!!!" On Sunday evening, March 24, 2002, three of the most diligent African-American thespians made history by literally kicking down the concrete doors (and views) of the Academy Awards. Thus, making it possible for both present and future African-American actors and actresses to choose confidence over criticism. Two of the three winners; first timers, showed the world (Black & White) that dedication, hard work and prayer can surely take you a lot further than one could ever dream possible. Furthermore, it was quite honorable of the winners to realize that in addition to it being a moral victory for themselves and their careers; they clearly understood that every African-American person won 3 Oscars on that Sunday night. I know I feel it! What about you?! Halle Berry - Best Actress (Monster's Ball) After 74 years of hoping and praying; of being blown-out, looked-over, passed-by, shutdown and underestimated, a woman of color has finally embraced the coveted Oscar for Best Actress. It has taken 3 decades (count them, 10 - 20 - 30) of our people condemning the academy for not acknowledging the tremendous talents of African-Americans, to give us our just desert. Now that the flood gates have been opened, it's time to rush on in people... March 24, 2002 - On this day in history, Halle Berry became the first woman of color to win an Oscar for Best Actress. "This is much bigger than me. This is for Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge and Diahann Carroll," an emotional Berry said as she accepted her award. Halle also dedicated her historic bestowal to some of her peers, such as: Angela Bassett, Vivica Fox and Jada Pinkett-Smith. With such class & poise, Halle Berry covered every point at the podium. She accepted her well-deserved award, she thanked the academy (gracefully), she showed appreciation for the African-American actresses that paved the way for her, she gave her peers a pat on the back and she even gave the future women of color actresses a vote of confidence: "this is for all of the nameless, faceless women of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened." Denzel Washington - Best Actor (Training Day) In 1963, Sidney Poitier was the very first African-American to ever take home the Oscar for Best anything... This was for his role in 'Lillies in the Field'. Since then, no other Black actor has come face to face with this statue. That is... Until 2002! Then came Denzel! "Two birds in one night, huh?" This was the first comment from Mr. Washington as he accepted his long awaited award. And, a very well deserved award if you ask me or anybody in the U.S. and Abroad that has witnessed Denzel's work. Don't get me wrong, he has had nods from the academy. What he hasn't had - the prize. Only the headache! No stranger to the Oscars, in 1989 Denzel took home the trophy for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding role in Glory. Of course he was estatic! Being humble and thankful comes along with life and maturity, but 39 years is a long time to wait. In my opinion, he has been getting played for years. Denzel has at least 30 movies to his credit; good ones. This man is a machine! Congratulations (finally) to Mrs. Halle Berry, Mr. Denzel Washington and Mr. Sidney Poitier for never giving up, continuing to work extra hard and now; making history! On this night, Denzel and Halle became the first African-American actors to ever win the top award in the same night. Sidney Poitier was awarded an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. "My people; making strides. That's what I'm talking about!" ••• |

Naughty by Nature: Iiconz (Naughty/TVT) |
|
by T.L. Sanders |
|
|
The more things change, the more they stay the same. In our ever growing; heavily populated society of Hip-Hop we have seen many trends. We have also witnessed a great number of one hit wonders, as well as artists/musicians whom surrender to the sophomore jinx. As we have watched innumerable groups take command of the stage; we have likewise, taken notice to the sudden disbandment and ultimate ruin of said groups. What does it take to attain longevity in our music industry? Some want to know. Others don't care. But, one thing remains the truth: Longevity is synonymous with adaptation. One must acclimatize oneself to the times and to the phase that our world is in at any given moment in time. One of the oldest Hip-Hop groups that still drop bombs, Naughty by Nature has not loss any of the hunger that they displayed with their self-titled debut, Naughty by Nature in 1991. "We came from the talent show circuit; you got to prove yourself. Since you start as a nobody, you gotta rock the crowd! We wanna take it to the next level. If break dancing is in, we wanna make you jump. Our style comes from crowd participation. There will be no boos!" Treach exclaims with pure and utter confidence. Treach and Vinnie grew up together in the same East Orange, NJ neighborhood. After high school they dropped their self-titled debut, Naughty by Nature and they haven't looked back since. Taking the world by storm with their first single, O.P.P., Treach and Vinnie began living out their deepest; most heartfelt realities. By 1999, Naughty by Nature had been hailed the "Kings of the Anthems" by critics and fans alike. "We know how to make anthems. Originality is a must!" Treach expressed via telephone. After reaching most of their dreams; a great many accolades, Naughty needed a break. Both the Acting and Modeling bugs caught up with Treach. And so; he pursued them! "Once the bug hit, I was into it." Vinnie (The Businessman) got his hands (and creativity) dirty by spearheading Naughty Gear and Naughty Films. Now - After a three year hiatus, Treach and Vinnie of Naughty by Nature are well rested and they have full-blown plans to reclaim what they deem theirs: MUSIC. With a new album (Iiconz) dropping on May 7, 2002, Treach's voice says that he is positive that this is their hottest release yet. "I think this is our best album because the years have seasoned us. Now we know what we're doing; in business and in music." Iiconz is Naughty's fifth blazing project to date, with 16 burning tracks. With hands lent from 3LW, Pink, Meth and Redman, Peter Gabriel and Queen Latifah, Treach and Vinnie are already strong candidates for that Musical Platinum Medal. One would have to think that after 11 years of successes, what could keep a group thriving? "We love what we do! We got Love for Music! Love for Naughty! Love for the fans and Love for the streets! The hiatus didn't really matter, because we put our all into everything that we do." Treach confided. You also have to wonder is it really possible for one to stay humble in such an arena? In an industry chock-full of false images of reality, who gets to keep their own soul? Speaking from experience, these brothers have been truly blessed; they have managed to erase the matrix; to preserve their souls. And in keeping it real, Treach expressed to me that he gives much gratefulness and respect to Queen Latifah. "We couldn't have done this album without her; 11 years later. She is beautiful in mind, spirit & soul; inside and out. She is a leader, a teacher, an entrepreneur, a friend, and a big-sister." And believe me, that wasn't laying it on thick at all! I totally felt the brother, and I have never even met La'. So, let's congratulate and not hate on a group of playas for doing they thang. Put dem' ones up and kill the hostility. And... As I said before, the brothers of Naughty by Nature have complete confidence in everything that they do. Confidence! That's an understatement. With their fifth album on tap, an American Music Award, a Source Award, a Grammy, a Clothing Line and Two Films entered into the Sundance Film Festival, East Orange Natives Treach and Vinnie exude both aplomb and longevity. And like my man Gen' would say, "Holla Front!" ••• |

CRAIG DAVID |
|
|
By: T.L. Sanders |
|
|
Straight from Southampton, England to Atlanta, Georgia, Craig David fed the crowd with exactly what they hungered for. After a timely intermission, the crowd roared at the dimming of the lights. With hopes that the man of the hour (or two) would be popping from behind the curtain at any given second, the packed house screamed, “we want Craig”. It was a little after nine when Craig David took the stage. From the mere sight of his thin frame, the crowd went absolutely ballistic. As he glided across the stage with ease, Craig David moved through his set in a smooth; continuous motion. It seemed as if there were a million hands wavering in the air as Mr. David demonstrated how comfortable he felt on the stage. He showed the entire crowd why his album was so-named, Born to do it. Every eye in the place could see that Craig was in his element; in a world all his own. Like a champion swimmer, Craig’s smooth vibrato stroked songs like the popular, “7 Days” and the emphatic “Time to Party” (just to name a few). As a matter of fact, if there was anyone in the house that wasn’t quite sure about Craig David’s talent, I guarantee they left the Coca-Cola Roxy a full-fledged member of his fan club. The most memorable points of the evening were when Craig proceeded to tease the audience by leaving the stage (band and all) in a single filed line before performing the head-banger, “Fill Me In”. As he and his band returned to the stage after all of 2 minutes, the crowd erupted. Literally feeling the bass in your chest throughout the entire performance was quite fulfilling also. And, seeing the crowd sing along to every song brought a good vibe up and throughout the venue. David’s style of music is labeled “two-step” by the hometown fans - and it works for him! Kudos to Craig David; a true talent! ••• |

This New York native also writes and produces. Ms. Keys’ debut album, songs in A minor in my opinion has shown and proved to be a for sure winner! Put a W in Alicia’s column! She comes in banging; with the intro, Piano and I. Alicia Keys boasts: “so what; it took me like, 2 years and shit! So come on! What you waitin’ on?!” It’s creative, ghetto, intelligent, musical, operatic & poetic all in one. She continues to come hard on track #2 (Girlfriend); not being scared to admit, “I think I’m jealous of your girlfriend. Even though she’s just a girl, that’s your friend.” You gotta love it! Alicia even stepped up and flipped Prince’s, How come you don’t call me; grabbing notes and throwing them in your ear. It’s jazzy with a touch of blues. Her first single, Fallin’ spelled a hit from conception. Now, one of my favorite joints on the album; Trouble is craaazy tight! I hate to compare, but it has this Amel/Erykah/Jill/Nelly Furtado feel and sound to it. It is plain to see that it’s all Alicia Keys’ style, it’s in her voice. I dare you to go out and buy this CD right now! When you do; play Rock wit U. It’s blaxploitation; it’s 70’s and it’s perfect for concert intermissions, or just chillin’. That is, until at about the 1:50 point. Where she starts to croon. “Do yo’ thang; Do yo’ thang!” As she sings. Yo, I’m telling you - this is an album that you need to have! Alicia explains on The Life, “this is the life; trying to survive.” And, I always say; “if you’re gonna do a remake, make it hot!” That she did! On Butterflyz, Ms. Keys harmonizes with a piano, a guitar and a bass. You can actually hear the talent oozing from the speakers. This is a mellower; more adult song. It is a song about spreading your wings of love; of feeling free in love. “You give me butterflyz.” You know, that nervous feeling of love that sits in the pit of your stomach?! My favorite cut on the album; hands down, Why do I feel so sad. Alicia tells us how she is: “hanging on the last string of love.” Her voice tone says it all during the chorus; “I should know, that in time things must change. So it shouldn’t be so bad. So, why do I feel so sad?” Everybody; go peep this album! I feel proud (as a fellow creator of art) to see that the creative circle of talent is finally making a 360 degree turn for the better. Heavy rotation! Speaking of rotation, I see Platinum plaques in this young woman’s future. Get yours Alicia! I’m Out!!! •••

Biological Warfare: |
|
By: T.L. Sanders |

With the decline of feeling secure in one’s own land comes a rise in discomfort and fear. With that very fear, there comes a rise in paranoia and an explosion of concern for our lives. Why should a disease that is prominent in Africa, Asia and South & Central America be of major concern to us? Furthermore, it is a disease of cattle, goats, horses, sheep and swine. This disease; this inflection is very rarely seen in humans. If so, it is seen in farmers and veterinarians (also wool workers). Since the onslaught of this massive human inflection in Florida, the spreading of Anthrax amongst the United States seems to be the next plan of attack. Releasing these deadly spores (airborne) can cause serious mass destruction. Anthrax is now being used as a biological weapon by terrorists against the United States, and it has the capability of causing enough diseases and deaths to take out an entire city or region. According to BBC news, “Anthrax is acknowledged as one of the most likely sources of a bio-weapon for either a single criminal or terrorist group.” This ‘silent killer’ is said to be cheap and easy to produce. Also, it only requires little technology to make; which equals cheap & easy weaponry. It is indeed our jobs as Americans to keep ourselves informed about our airborne predator. Even though we don’t know what it is or if we can protect ourselves, to stay informed puts us a step ahead of the game. It is also important that we stick together as a nation like never before. Chanda Dixon, a Telecommunications Specialist who lives in Gary, Indiana feels the pressures of the world’s current events. “To be honest, it is kind of scary. With all that is going on, it has everyone wondering what’s going to happen next. I just pray that we all get through these events okay. We just have to stay prayful, because God is the only one that can help us.”
By definition, Anthrax is “an infectious disease of warm-blooded animals caused by a spore-forming bacterium, transmissible to man especially by the handling of infected products (as hair), and characterized by external ulcerating nodules or by lesions in the lungs.” It is rarely seen in the U.S., but exists in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The organism, Anthrax Bacillus (which was the first bacteria known to be the cause of the disease) was grown in 1877 by Robert Koch. According to experts, when exposed to the air, it takes the form of a spore (which looks like a seed). And in that spore form (if introduced to the soil), can survive for years; even decades. It
would actually take anywhere between 8,000 and 10,000 spores to infect.
Anthrax is a microorganism; meaning that it is of ultramicroscopic
proportion. With this being said, these microorganisms are totally
invisible, odorless and tasteless. It is said that 10,000 of these tiny
spores are smaller than one speck of dust. Anthrax, as well as other
airborne predators like: Botulism and Smallpox will force Americans to
stay alert. Anthrax is over 100,000 times more severe than the ugliest
of chemical weapons. It is also easily spread, but not so easy to
detect. A nation could become victims and grow ill before anyone figures
out that anthrax is the murderer. According to the U.S. Department of
Defense, “it is so hazardous that there are 100 million lethal doses per
gramme of Anthrax material.” Contrary to popular belief, this is by no
means a new disease; it has been around for eons. Vanessa Dortch, a
Benefits Coordinator at a Law Firm in Atlanta states, “the world has been
masterminding weapons of destruction for centuries, Anthrax is just
another weapon. In this new millennium, why would you risk soldiers when
you can use a virus. Biological warfare is the faceless warrior.” The
state of affairs in the U.S. has become so serious that the heavy metal
group, Anthrax has even decided to change their band name. According to
the October 11th press release, the group came up with the name about a
decade or more ago, because it sounded cool and aggressive. The album,
“Spreading the Disease” fit their chosen name perfectly. They were in
fact spreading their music and their name around the world. “Now in the
wake of those events, our name symbolizes fear, paranoia and death.
Suddenly, our name is not so cool.” PART II - TYPES AND CAUSES OF THE ANTHRAX DISEASE The disease known as ‘Anthrax’ is caused by the organism Bacillus Anthracis. It is most commonly found in animals in Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa. The Anthrax bacteria form spores that can be inhaled, contaminate the skin through animal/human contact or it can be eaten in infected meat (Anthrax cannot be spread through human contact). There arethree types of Anthrax: Cutaneous Anthrax, Intestinal Anthrax and Respiratory Anthrax. Cutaneous Anthrax; although the least deadly, causes sores on the skin (lesions). They rarely cause pain, but if not treated can spread and cause blood poisoning. “It is fatal in one in 20 cases”. The second type is called: Intestinal Anthrax; this type is caused by eating contaminated meat. This type leads blood poisoning and fever. “It is frequently fatal”. The third and final type is referred to as, Respiratory Anthrax. In this form, spores are inhaled and stick to the lungs.
“Symptoms of this disease start out as similar to the simple flu, but
rapidly worsen and the patient goes into shock between two and six days
later”. It has been over 20 years since the most recent case of this form
of Anthrax (respiratory) has plagued us in the United States. “Anthrax is
primarily a disease of domesticated and wild animals, particularly
herbivorous animals. Humans become infected incidentally when brought
into contact with diseased animals, their hides, hair or their
excrement.” Death usually occurs from a lack of oxygen, shock,
respiratory problems and cardiac arrest. This occurs suddenly and very
unexpectedly. Since we have been forced to stay on our toes about this
and other possible brushes with death brought on by the evil feelings and
thoughts of others, we must keep our minds open to other possible ways
that we can be affected by this deadly inflection. Other than the obvious
ways that we can contract Anthrax, there are indeed more ways that we can
fall a victim to terrorist master plans with the Anthrax disease. Spores
can be released into our water supply and it can be released airborne in
malls, football stadiums, concerts and/or our transit systems. The scary
part is that “symptoms are often difficult to distinguish from other, less
serious infections.” PART III - HOW ANTHRAX AFFECTS HUMANS Along
with being one of the oldest animal diseases known to man, Anthrax can
contaminate the air & the soil for many years. If inhaled, spores get
trapped into the lungs and the breakdown of blood vessels and hemorrhaging
causes pneumonia. “Death follows within five days.” If ingested,
gangrene of the spleen occurs and causes intestinal and stomach ulcers;
“fatal within three days.” If the skin is infected, the tiny spores enter
lesions and cause massive swelling and fever. According to researchers,
it may take up to two months before victims actually realize that they
have been infected with Anthrax. There are two stages of sickness:
“first, fever, shortness of breath, cough, headache, vomiting, chills,
weakness, abdominal pain & chest pain, sometimes followed by apparent
recovery. The second stage is abrupt and violent, with death possibly
following in hours as multiplying bacteria produce toxins, leading to
swollen lymph glands, lung and brain damage and bleeding. Eighty percent
of those who develop symptoms, experience the following: congestion of the
nose & throat, general discomfort, joint pain & stiffness, pneumonia and
lesions that break open and form scabs. “This is scarier than ever
because we can be walking around thinking that we have the common flu,
when we can indeed die from Anthrax in a matter of days. It’s the fear of
the unknown.” Gerald Wiggins, a Lawyer from Atlanta states. Although
extremely difficult to diagnose, it is detrimental to any and everyone’s
health that the disease be treated at an early stage (preferably when
flu-like symptoms emerge). According to experts at TIME, Anthrax is
extremely lethal. The disease progresses in stages. “Once introduced
into the body, the particles of Anthrax travel into the tiny air sacs in
the lungs. They lodge there and begin to disseminate themselves. At this
point the bacterium produce toxins, which is what creates the illness in
the host: first you see flu-like symptoms. Then, in hours or in a few
days, some patients will have a brief period of recovery. Others progress
directly to the second stage of the disease, which generally leads to
shock, massive swelling of lymph nodes and hemorrhagic meningitis
(bleeding in the brain). Once the toxins reach a critical mass, death is
inevitable.” Today, Anthrax exists in livestock, in labs and in nature.
Even though it depends on the weather conditions to successfully spread
Anthrax to the masses airborne; to cause a maximum number of fatalities,
Anthrax bombs are used as a weapon. This is because it can be grown easily
with the right equipment. It is more likely that America would come in
contact with the inhalation form of Anthrax. This is so because releasing
this disease airborne in a strategic location is likely to be inhaled by,
and deadly to a larger number of victims. PART IV - CURES AND VACCINATIONS If administered in the early stages, antibiotics can treat and/or cure the Anthrax disease. There is in fact a vaccine for Anthrax. However, that vaccine is only administered to military personnel. Alison Harris, a concerned citizen of Davenport, Iowa warns the nation of a possible shortage in vaccination for civilians. “My first concern is... Are we as a nation prepared? I know that the military has priority over the vaccinations, and why not civilians? I think that the doses of vaccine should be shortened, so public health services will be able to help anyone who has been infected with these deadly bacteria. I also believe that this is a legitimate bioterrorist threat.” The government states that the current vaccine will not be effective for civilians, because it requires a person to take six doses per day for sixteen months to work. “That kind of schedule is not really workable for the general public.” The government should think about coming up with a new vaccine that is efficient, effective and workable for civilians. There is no blueprint for this to happen anytime in the near future, but let’s keep our finger crossed. A small amount of civilians have been given the green light to receive vaccination, this includes: lab workers, veterinarians and individuals that work with imported animal furs, hair, meat & wool.
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) is the antibiotic needed to curb the appetite of
Anthrax. Children younger than 16, pregnant women, infants and senior
citizens are advised against the use of Cipro. “The most medically
acceptable way to tackle Anthrax is through vaccination.” There are other
ways to stop Anthrax in its tracks: through the use of penicillin for
unvaccinated peoples, burning and through steam vaccination of
contaminated articles. It is good to know that there is no record of
Anthrax being transmitted through person to person contact. PART V - CAN THEY MAKE ANTHRAX? First of all, we as Americans must keep our eyes and spirit open to any suspicious behavior that enters our domain. Any strange spraying of mist in the air should definitely be considered ‘suspicious’. “The spores are very stable and can be stored for long periods as a dry power. This can be put into munitions or discharged as an aerosol using sprayers. A crop-sprayer loaded with Anthrax material could distribute large numbers of spores and living bacteria over wide areas. This could cause wholesale infection and many deaths.” The making of Anthrax is an extremely difficult task to carry out, but many nations have the capacity to carry this task out. Currently, there are more than 10 nations that have the ability to cultivate biological weapons. The most effective way for Anthrax to survive is in the aerosol form. This way, it could be spread airborne and inhaled; this will cause the respiratory form of the disease (which is the most fatal). For example, “the accidental release of Anthrax spores from a military research laboratory in former Soviet Union in 1979 caused at least 79 cases of respiratory infection - and 68 deaths.” With this scary information to swallow, we must keep in mind that it is our lives that is at stake. We must also keep ourselves informed about not only this, but also other forms of terrorist attacks that can affect our lives. Fact: Any person with access to a research facility can get Anthrax. Universities lack the security needed to keep people away from the Anthrax cultures, which are kept in regular freezers. “They are often poorly catalogued and sometimes researchers are not even sure what they have got in their collections.” Our world is in a disastrous state! Anthrax - ‘a rebel without a pause’. •••

SUPERBOWL XXXVI - NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA |
|
Story by: T.L. Sanders |
|
|
New Orleans, Louisiana was the place to be for Superbowl Sunday, February 3, 2002. The town best known for Mardi Gras beads was packed with celebrities, locals, regulars and anybody in between. And the party scene was outrageous! There was an event for every night of the weekend (Pre-Superbowl, Post-Superbowl, etc.). Nawlens (as they affectionately refer to it), served as the meeting place for Superbowl XXXVI - Rams vs. Patriots. And like Prince once said, "we partied like it was 1999". The most beautifulest event of the weekend took place on Sunday night, February 3, 2002. This post-Superbowl after party made you forget the terrible stench in the air when walking through the French Quarters, made you dismiss the rudeness of the Denny's wait staff, and even forced one to forgive the drunkards for their pure and utter disrespect. Well as they say, "when in Rome". Hosted by Insights, Inc., the entire weekend came off lovely. They literally had the Radisson Hotel inhaling and spitting out countless numbers of bodies the whole weekend. I know, I know - talk is cheap! So, why don't I give a brief rundown of SOME of the athletes/celebrities that made sure that their face was in the place for this Superbowl Extravaganza: Warrick Dunn, Daunte Culpepper, Robert Griffith, Donovan McNabb, Charlie Batch, Shawn Springs, Kordell Stewart, Lil Jon, Trick Daddy, Ja Rule, SoSo Def, Rockafella Records, FUBU, Cedric "The Entertainer", Biz Markie and Jam Master Jay. Whoa - let me clear my throat (as I did my bank account this weekend). New Orleans MUST give it up to insights! These ladies set it off! Also, a shout goes out to FUBU; they totally steered clear of the 'I'm a rich - stuck up - diamond rocking celebrity, and you can't talk to me' attitude. As well, Cedric "The Entertainer" for patiently taking all those pictures; with all those honey's. It's a hard job, but somebody has to do it.

event planning. And, the only thing that I can say is that they deliver! ••• |

Prophet

Story by: T.L. Sanders |

Established on a dream and an $800 loan, Motown Records was founded by Berry Gordy, Jr. in 1959. The basic premise of Motown was to allow top black performers to give Soul and Rhythm & Blues to the world. Motown has been on the map for over 4 decades, and has no immediate plans to stop pumping out the hits. Hitsville, U.S.A.; the original birthplace of the 'Motown Sound' in Detroit, Michigan has harbored some of the finest talent that has ever graced the radio and stage. Some of the famous names of the early days include: The Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jackie Wilson and Stevie Wonder. Motown Records has such a strong foundation, that they have been producing top 10 artists since the early 60's. If you're doing your math, that is over 40 years of hits and hit makers. The 1970's proved to be the decade of Marvin Gaye and the Jackson 5 respectfully at Motown Records. It was also the decade of major changes for Berry Gordy and his brainchild - Motown. In June of 1972, Motown's Detroit office closed and moved its headquarters to Los Angeles, California. "Many Motown fans believed that the company's heart and soul was lost when it abandoned Detroit; that its most creative days were from 1959 - 1972." In 1973, Berry Gordy, Jr. resigned as President. By the 1980's, Motown Records were basically a Platinum selling company. It was Lionel Ritchie's 10 times Platinum album (Can't Slow Down) in 1984 that put them over the top. "In June 1988, Berry Gordy sold Motown Records to a partnership between MCA and Boston Ventures." Even that couldn't stop the show. In 1989, Motown began taking on a new blend of artists. By this time, Boyz II Men and Queen Latifah were the starting lineup; a total change from the laid back - smooth lyrical style of the olden days. Stomping into the 90's, Motown bolstered such artists as Erykah Badu, Brian McKnight and a host of others. Keeping in tune with how the world revolves, Motown Records has done a complete 360. We have now traveled over 40 years in time to the year 2002, where hot new talent - Prophet Jones is taking over where artists like: Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson left off. With their soul-stirring melodies, Prophet Jones takes you back to the early 70's when Marvin Gaye asked the world "What's Going On?" Not just another boy group, Goldee, Hollywood, K.D. and P. Rowe are bringing that 'Motown Sound' back to the mainstream. Sending positive messages of life and love through song shows their dedication to their craft. Thus, being considered a true prophet. It's like Hitsville, U.S.A.; Detroit, Michigan all over again with Prophet Jones on the Motown roster. I'm sure that Berry Gordy, Jr. feels extremely proud to know that there is a group out their that is still carrying the torch of the 1959 - 1972 Motown groove. And their name - Prophet Jones! What's in a name? Everything! Ask members: Goldee, Hollywood, K.D. and P. Rowe; I bet they'll tell you the exact same thing. Prophet Jones is more than just your average boy group; they exude that true showmanship and spirit of back in the day R&B Soul music. Adding to their repertoire' by keeping it real, these dudes are just regular 'joes' with pipes that most people wish they had. On Friday, October 19th of 2001, Prophet Jones appeared on 106 & Park and tore the joint apart. The audience (live and television) got to see the real crooners at work. Yo' boy P. Rowe sings so soulfully; so effortlessly. "I usually don't get excited, but when we were on the stage at 106 & Park and we're doing our thang up there, it got to me. I was like 'we here'. It felt good to be received," K.D. explains. University Records President, Haqq Islam made a tremendous power move when he formed the group, Prophet Jones. Destined to be around for as long as they are around, their name speaks novels of their fate. The name, Prophet Jones fits perfectly with their image (Prophet, describing their gift of music & spreading it to the masses. And Jones, because they are regular 'joes'). "We trying to do it. Prophet Jones is more than just a group; it's a company. We doin' big things. We got it all playboy", K.D. says. It's been three full years since Prophet Jones first started, and they are now starting to become perfectly molded as a group. "We're bringing true soul back." According to K.D., Prophet Jones was started in Washington, D.C. by high school friends, Goldee 'da godfather' and Hollywood. K.D., hailing from Baltimore, Maryland later joined the duo. After opening for label mate Mya and stealing the show, Haqq snatched up P. Rowe and the foursome began working in the studio as a team. K.D. states that the groups' whole aim is to bring R & B Soul back. "We respect a lot of people; a lot of groups, but a lot of artists don't bring the soul. I ain't gon' front, I got Jodeci and I got Jagged Edge. In the midst of Hip-Hop taking over, you gotta bring it! A lot of people don't bring it!" Prophet Jones really got it together; they really seem like they got their heads on straight. Having focus meetings, reality-check meetings and staying in prayer helps to keep these four young crooners grounded. "It's hard out here with all of this hype building up. Growing up in the hood with nothing, it's hard when you start shining. But... We allow everybody in the group to shine. We compliment each other", K. D. says. "We just regular cats that's been blessed." With no formal training, the members of Prophet Jones have definitely been blessed with natural talent. Working on your craft indeed pays off, because Prophet Jones is straight on the rise! What's the secret to the groups' success? "Prayer and natural; God given talent. We do our homework. We study Marvin Gaye and the O'Jays. We keep up with the originators." Not only do they keep up with the originators, they keep it real. While talking to member K.D., he tells me how they manage to stay themselves: "we sell because we real. We keep our regular look, but we're professional. We off the streets too! And like Jadakiss say, 'we gon' make it'. Everybody gotta make it." Managed by the same company that manages Will Smith's career and backed by Haqq Islam & University Records/Motown Records, Prophet Jones' careers are moving full speed ahead. The ignition key has been turned, the gas pedal pushed, and now it's on and krackin'. With a self-titled debut album fresh off the grill, a hit single ("Woof") on the charts and a single; LifeTime climbing up the charts at a rapid pace, Prophet Jones is here to stay. ••• |

AIDS AMONGST AFRICAN-AMERICAN PEOPLE |
|
Story by: T.L. Sanders |
|
|
In the midst of our world's disastrous events, don't you think that it's time for our people to get their minds right? The Alarms are sounding; the Sirens are going off, it's time that we open our eyes. We are losing many people in our community to this unseen beast. We are aware of its presence, but we ignore the obvious! We need to open our minds to AIDS amongst African-Americans; we need to right all the wrongs. We also need to learn how to protect ourselves. This is, "The Mis-Education of our Community". AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a lethal disease caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). The virus destroys human T4 cells; which are considered the main controllers of ones immune system. HIV & AIDS became prevalent in our minds and in our community in the early 1980's. Back then, it was known as strictly a gay person's problem. Well, I guess ignorance is bliss because AIDS is and always has been everyone's problem. "The virus attacks the immune system, the body's line of defense against disease and infections. When the immune system breaks down, one becomes susceptible to serious, often deadly infections and cancers called opportunistic infections, so named because they take advantage of the body's weakened defenses." HIV is spread through contact with body fluids; it is acquired from someone else. The virus is transmitted sexually (vaginal, anal or oral), through direct injections with shared needles & syringes, and also from mother to infant contact (blood and/or breast milk). A person's chance of becoming HIV positive more than triples if: they've had numerous sexual partners, if they make it a practice of having unprotected sex and if they have sex with an infected partner or partners. Let's release our grip on ignorance; HIV can not be transmitted by shaking someone's hand, touching them or by simply being close to them. They are four symptomatic stages that patients go through leading to AIDS: Window period, Acute, Asymptomatic and Symptomatic stage. The fifth and final stage is actually the AIDS virus. The first stage, the window period is when the body produces no antibodies to HIV. This can last for up to a year or more. In this stage, an infected person would prematurely test negative for HIV. In the second stage: acute, the body begins to create antibodies that show signs that HIV is present. Fever, headaches, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes are tell-tell signs in the acute stage. When all flu-like symptoms disappear, a patient enters the asymptomatic stage of the disease. In this stage, a person can show no symptoms for over ten years. However, HIV is actually demolishing T4 cells, but the body is healthy enough to continue making new ones. "The symptomatic stage is marked by the severe depletion of T4 cells and a large number of symptoms including fever, weight loss, pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, night sweats, headaches and especially, swollen lymph nodes. This is the final stage before the progression of AIDS." There are also two major tests that are administered to determine if there are antibodies to HIV present. The ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) is the most frequently used of the two. This is the initial screening for the virus for four reasons: it's cheap, results come back rapidly, it offers standardized procedures and it has a high degree of reproducibility. The problem with this test arises because "it isn't very specific. It is very sensitive, which means that the test will recognize anything that has HIV antibodies in it. When you get tested, they perform an initial ELISA test. If that comes back positive, the blood sample gets sent out for a Western Blot." The Western Blot is the other form of testing for the disease. It is the total opposite of the ELISA. The Western Blot test is extremely specific, expensive and it takes long periods of time to administer. "It is used for determining a 'true positive'. The Western Blot identifies which of the HIV antigens the antibodies are responding to." It is definitely time overdue for us as African-Americans to open our eyes to the dangers of spreading ourselves around! While researching this ever-so fragile subject, I found that it is our community that has been touched by this epidemic most seriously. Between 1981 and the year 2000, AIDS cases in the African-American community has grown tremendously.
Did you know that:
My people!!! Brothers and Sisters!!! We are causing ourselves to become extinct. We are giving our souls to a killer for one night of pleasure. Is it really worth it in the long run? Get in the know; get involved!!! by: T.L. Sanders ••• |
